As an important link in the manufacturing process of HNBR O-rings, vulcanization treatment plays a vital role in improving its mechanical properties and elasticity.
1. Characteristics of hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR)
Hydrogenated nitrile rubber is a highly saturated elastomer obtained by special hydrogenation treatment of traditional nitrile rubber (NBR). This treatment reduces the unsaturation in the rubber molecular chain, thereby significantly improving its heat resistance, aging resistance, chemical corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Compared with the original nitrile rubber, HNBR can remain stable at higher temperatures and has better oil resistance and wear resistance. 2. Importance and process of vulcanization treatment
Vulcanization treatment is a key step in the manufacturing process of HNBR O-rings, which determines the final physical and chemical properties of the O-rings. Vulcanization is a chemical reaction process that cross-links the rubber molecular chains through heating and/or pressurization to form a stable network structure. This network structure gives the rubber higher tensile strength, tear strength and wear resistance, as well as better elastic recovery.
The specific process of vulcanization treatment includes:
Preheating stage: Before the start of vulcanization, the HNBR O-ring usually needs to be preheated to a certain temperature to accelerate the start of the vulcanization reaction. The preheating temperature and time need to be adjusted according to the specific formula of HNBR and the vulcanization process.
Vulcanization reaction stage: The preheated O-ring is placed in a vulcanization mold and then sent to the vulcanizer for heating and pressurization. The vulcanization temperature is usually high, and for HNBR, it is generally between 150℃ and 200℃. The vulcanization time depends on the thickness of the O-ring, the vulcanization temperature and the type of vulcanizing agent, usually between a few minutes and a few hours. At this stage, cross-linking reactions occur between the rubber molecular chains to form a stable network structure.
Post-vulcanization stage: After the vulcanization reaction is completed, the O-ring is usually allowed to cool naturally to room temperature in the vulcanizer to complete the post-curing of the vulcanization reaction. This stage helps to further stabilize the structure of the vulcanized product and improve its mechanical properties and elasticity.
Demolding and inspection: After cooling, the O-ring is removed from the vulcanization mold and subjected to appearance inspection and performance testing. The inspection includes the size, shape, surface quality of the O-ring, and whether there are defects such as cracks and bubbles. Performance testing includes testing of indicators such as tensile strength, tear strength, hardness, and compression permanent deformation.
3. Temperature and time control during vulcanization
During the vulcanization process, temperature and time are two critical parameters. The temperature directly affects the rate and degree of the vulcanization reaction, while the length of time determines the sufficiency of the vulcanization reaction. For HNBR, due to the characteristics of its molecular structure, the temperature and time need to be strictly controlled during the vulcanization process to ensure product quality.
